Do Honor Societies Really Matter?

By Jaclyn Gata on February 18, 2014

From the time you’re in high school you’re expected to join clubs upon clubs and most importantly honor societies. Even more so in college but the question is do honor society really matters?

Honor societies are a lot of work and most of them will spit out the same contrite information about making connections and bonding as a community. While most students will only join for the resume builder and cords that come with the induction. In high school it’s a lot easier to know that the more on your application will increase the chances of getting into a good college. But once you’ve made the transition into an undergrad do the honor societies still hold the same amount of weight?

For those looking to continue on in higher education honor societies are still a great resume builder and especially a CV builder (which is supposed to list literally every single thing you’ve ever done since you were in high school).  It tells schools that not only are you interested in learning and going to school but you’re also interested in becoming a community and making their school look good.

Despite the lame cliches that they throw out on the brochures, joining honor societies is a great way to make friends. Most of the other students in clubs are in the same class ranks, have the same dedication and even the same majors as you, meaning you’re likely to have something in common. Even if you’re just one of those students that joins to get the cords, chances are there’s a person there who is too.

Honor societies are one of the best places to get great opportunities. A lot of honor societies have private access to scholarships, newsletters and a network of members that you can’t get access to without that organization. Networking is an important part of getting into the real world after college.

It can also be hard to do community service and get the time to go to school events. Most clubs require community service and give points or credit for going to school events. While clubs aren’t forcing you to go they do give you the opportunity to go without feeling guilty for spending time outside and not on school work.

Honor societies are not something to be taken lightly. In high school it was only going to a meeting once a week but as an undergrad it means high dues, lots of meetings, networking and community building but they give just as much as they require.
